MathEd Forum: October 2025 - Problem posing
Doing Mathematics Through Problem Posing
Description
Problem posing by students in math classes has been described as an important part of the mathematical process in provincial and international curricula, but is overshadowed in practice by an emphasis on problem solving. Educators who are tasked with posing problems for students to solve can attest to the difficulty of posing and assessing problems, and unlike students, they are already content experts. At this meeting of the Math Ed Forum, we will discuss methods of engaging students in problem posing, why it is an important practice, examples of using it in class assessments, and the challenges we face.
