About Jerry Marsden
Marsden, along with Bill Shadwick, Carl Riehm, and Stephen Halperin, were the original group who founded the Fields Institute in 1987 with limited financial resources. Jerry, along with Bill and Peter Nicholson (who was an early chairman of the board) were the guiding forces who really brought the Fields Institute into being. All three played critical roles - Jerry gave Fields mathematical prestige, Peter brought political clout and some crucial guidance, and Bill threw his entrepreneurial talents completely into the enterprise.
Jerry was a Professor of Control and Dynamical Systems at the California Institute of Technology. Sadly, he passed away on September 21, 2010 at the age of 68. |
