Abstract:
I will discuss what happens when a particle is measured during the tunneling process. This leads to a paradox in terms of energy: if the particle is found in the tunneling region, where does the energy come from? On the other hand, if it is not there, the tunneling process cannot happen. I will present results from a theoretical analysis involving a triple quantum dot in the cotunneling regime that is continuously measured. A measurement-assisted tunneling effect is predicted. The energetic ramifications from the measurement process permits an engine operation or refrigeration.
