The (global) geometric Langlands correspondence is an analogue fo the (global) ``classical" Langlands

correspondence in which number fields are replaced by function fields of algebraic curves and the Galois group

is replaced by the fundamental group (following Weil's dictionary). I describe several variants of this

geometric correspondence and describe recent advances in the theory which relate the geometric and more

arithmetic versions of the correspondence.
